The children at Baldwins Hill benefit from a creative approach to writing, inspired by their Curriculum Experience and high quality texts. We use the achievement statements to deliver the National Curriculum in each year group. Lessons are planned to develop writing skills within the Learning Experience but there are also opportunities for independent, sustained writing. This ensures that the children are able to apply the skills that they have learnt and receive meaningful feedback from their teacher about how they are progressing. We also plan opportunities for children to self-assess their work and peer-assess the work of others. This focuses the children on the key characteristics of effective writing for their age.
From The National Curriculum in England – framework document 2013 Purpose of Study;
“English has a pre-eminent place in education and in society. A high-quality education in English will teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them. Through reading in particular, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Literature, especially, plays a key role in such development. Reading also enables pupils both to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society; pupils, therefore, who do not learn to speak, read and write fluently and confidently are effectively disenfranchised.”
